Unbroken is the story of Louis Zamperini, the World War II pilot who survived a deadly plane crash and brutal Japanese prisoner-of-war camps before being reunited with freedom.

by Laura Hillenbrand

In May 1943, an American Air Force Bomber plane plunged into the Pacific Ocean. Only three crew members survived the crash: former Olympic runner turned lieutenant Louis "Louie" Zamperini, pilot Russell Allen Phillips, and crewman Francis McNamara.

The men had to survive a grueling battle of survival on a raft in the vast, treacherous ocean, overcoming starvation, thirst, and weakness in addition to staving off sharks. Despite hiding from Japanese fire, the men were captured and tortured by their enemy on reaching land.

In Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, Laura Hillenbrand beautifully depicts Zamperini's traumatic story, providing a sense of hope, strength, and resilience against all odds.

Louie ran through the place where cages had once held him, where a black-eyed man had crawled inside him. But the cages were long gone ... There was no trace of them here among the voices, the falling snow, and the old and joyful man, running
