Overview

Lawsuits, divorce, and financial ruin plagued the Gucci family for years, but the murder of Maurizio Gucci propelled the family dysfunction into the spotlight. The 1995 killing, plotted and paid for by Maurizio's ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, made headlines after the Gucci family had sold their remaining shares of the company.

The Gucci brand is synonymous with Florentine artisanship and the surrounding region, where it was founded in the early 20th-century. The company's reputation in the wake of Maurizio's murder suffered under public scrutiny.

Sara Gay Forden is a journalist who spent over a decade covering the Milan fashion scene, including the growth of Gucci and other luxury brands. In The House of Gucci: A True Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed, Forden explores the Gucci family history, weaving a narrative of their collective successes and failures in business and life.

"The Guccis were forced to turn the page when desire failed to keep step with reality. From the moment the family and the company split apart, the family set out on its bitter and tragic path, while the company began climbing from disarray to unprecedented success."
