Course Hack
Sensation and PerceptionBy Monash University

In a Nutshell

This FutureLearn course from Monash University explains how the anatomy of our sensory organs molds our experience of the world, and how what we see as reality is a creation of the brain.

Every perception you have is a creation of your brain. The colours you see, the forms you see, the depth you see in the world … That information is a figment of your brain, of your imagination.

Matthew Mundy

Introduction

You might assume that what we see, hear, and smell in the world is what is 'really there.' But that's not true.

Our astonishingly complex sensory organs combine with our brain to create an experience of reality that, although closely informed by the external world, is also part fiction.

This FutureLearn course on sensation and perception is produced by Monash University, where course leader Matthew Mundy is Associate Professor and Director of Education for the School of Psychological Sciences.

The course defines sensation and perception before exploring how our sensory organs receive data from the external world and how their design contributes to our experience of reality.

The course also discusses perceptual illusions that illustrate the bugs in our sensory systems.
