Acclaimed journalist Anne Applebaum writes a history of the one of the deadliest famines of the twentieth century, the Ukrainian 'Holodomor.'

The Holodomor, meaning 'to kill by hunger,' is the name given to the famine that occurred in Ukraine in the early 1930s, while the country was under the control of Joseph Stalin's USSR.

Today, the Holodomor famine stands as one of the deadliest in recorded history, claiming at least four million lives.

Anne Applebaum is a Polish-American journalist and historian, a staff writer for The Atlantic, and a former editor for The Washington Post.

Applebaum's first publication, Gulag: A History, won a Pulitzer Prize and put her on the map as one of the most important voices writing about the former USSR today.

In Red Famine, Applebaum draws on economic and archival research to demonstrate that the famine that devastated Ukraine was not a mere tragedy but was purposefully caused by the Stalinist regime.
