When you're carrying a gun, there is this certain freedom that it provides you. All of a sudden you become more of a master of your own destiny. Guns in America are like a conduit for so many other psychological things.

Introduction

After the horrific shooting in Uvalde, Texas which claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers, America's ongoing gun debate has returned to the front of the political agenda.

Uvalde was the 27th school shooting in America in 2022, and mass shootings in general now happen twice a day.

But why has gun violence increased so dramatically?

Ryan Busse is a policy advisor for Giffords, a gun control advocacy organization. Until 2020, however, he was an executive for firearms company Kimber.

Busse believes that over the past 25 years, the American firearms industry has undergone a complete transformation.

Speaking to The Guardian's Today in Focus podcast hosted by Nosheen Iqbal, Busse explains the history of the U.S. gun industry and what can be done to prevent further violence.
