Introduction

From mysterious drug-resistant illnesses to miraculous deathbed recoveries, the world is full of cases that defy medical prognosis.

Heal, a documentary by filmmaker Kelly Noonan, follows four individuals through their experiences with non-standard treatments, supported by a cast of open-minded doctors and alternative practitioners.

Kelly Noonan is the author of two books on self-healing and creator of documentary films such as No Bad Days and Beneath.

In Heal, Noonan examines the theories behind the mind-body connection and allows us to witness healers practicing their techniques – to the apparent benefit of their patients.

Through it all, the film asks us to go beyond our idea of the body as a machine, placing the emphasis on what medical science can't adequately explain.

While Noonan acknowledges the obvious value of conventional modern medicine, she asks us to question whether drugs and surgery are always the best way to heal chronic conditions.

Rather than resorting to mysticism, Heal explores the possible scientific explanations underlying alternative treatments.

The film encourages us to open our minds to the possibility that our bodies' ancestral instincts can be as valuable as science for healing what ails us.
