Introduction

Over half the world's population lives in urban areas, and these areas emit around 70% of the world's carbon.

Fortunately, besides being centers of pollution and emissions, cities are also places of innovation and change.

In this course offered by the University of Lund through Coursera, scientists from across Europe explore how cities can harvest their creative energy to progress towards a sustainable future.

Professor Lena Neij is director of the university's International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics, while Dr. Kes McCormick is an associate professor and coordinator for sharing economy program Sharing Cities Sweden.

Together with visiting researchers Harriet Bulkeley and James Evans, the instructors cover areas such as greening our housing, transport, and infrastructure, as well as urban experimentation and bringing nature back into our cities.

Along the way, we're shown real-life examples of sustainable innovation in cities from across the world.
