Civilized man has exchanged some part of his chances of happiness for a measure of security.

Sigmund Freud

Introduction

A functioning human society is built on strict laws and implicit moral codes, including punishment for aggression toward fellow citizens.

Sigmund Freud, famed for his development of psychoanalysis, argues that our idea of civilization might fly in the face of human instinct, and cause more harm than good.

Written in 1929, Civilization and Its Discontents is one of Freud's later works. Drawing on his experience as a psychoanalyst, Freud observes the human condition and asks whether the concept of civilization is the reason for many of humanity's issues.

In parts philosophical, anthropological, and scientific, Freud's controversial work deals with the drive for life, the drive for death, and everything in between.
