At this time, the Taliban have ordered the women to remain at home. They've warned us not to protest or we'll be arrested. But we will not be silenced. We plan to raise our voices for the women who are already imprisoned.

Introduction

In 2021, the Taliban returned to power after 20 years on the fringes of Afghan society.

As the U.S. completed its withdrawal from the country, Afghanistan swiftly became the strict Islamic Emirate it had once been.

In the 2023 documentary Bread and Roses, Sahra Mani follows the lives of women who chose to fight back against the returning regime.

Charting the journey of women across Kabul, Mani pieces together the bravery of thousands of women who protested, resisted, and stood up to the Taliban, and the brutal repression they faced for doing so.
