In a Nutshell

Composition is a powerful tool to maximise the impact of your art. You want to draw the viewer's attention and guide their eye to discover all the detail you've put into your work. Here, I'll teach you three core principles that I call 'The 3 F's of Composition.'

A composition is an arrangement, built out of parts, that aims at seamlessness.

Introduction

Composition. Many artists feel like it is too complex of a topic or too restricting in their workflow, so they don't learn about it or make intentional use of it.

What does composition even mean? The Cambridge Dictionary describes it as: 'The way that people or things are arranged in a painting or photograph. Think of it in terms of music: different notes, melodies, and chords are arranged to create a seamless piece of music. That's composition.

If the musician didn't know the rules of composition, their music would turn out to be a chaotic mix of notes and sounds strung together. The same goes for visual art: principles of composition can be a guideline to help create coherence in an artwork, enhance the drama, and let it tell a story.

Of course, none of these principles should restrict you. Rules are meant to be broken. However, knowing the theory can help you be more intentional in the creative process.

The three principles I will teach you are:

  1. Focus
  2. Flow
  3. Framing
