Book Hack
Working in the 21st CenturyBy Mark Larson

In a Nutshell

American workers from all walks of life talk about what they do, how they feel about their jobs, and what motivates them to keep coming to work every day.

Favorite Quote

Nobody who runs a hedge fund is working harder than a guy who's driving Uber and washing dishes and is a school crossing guard, and his wife is cleaning houses. This is not a work ethic issue. But this is how we value people.

Betty Bogg, Connections for the Homeless

Introduction

In 1974, oral historian Studs Terkel published Working, a collection of personal accounts by American workers that reflected on what they did and how they felt about their work.

Half a century since Terkel's book came out, we still have teachers, sanitation workers, and baseball players, but the nature of work itself has changed.

Mark Larson is an award-winning educator and author who has worked in high schools, universities, The Field Museum, and the Lincoln Park Zoo.

In his 2024 book, Working in the 21st Century, Larson pays tribute to Studs Terkel by talking to over a hundred modern Americans about what their work means to them and why they do it.
