Adam Kay, a former doctor turned comedian and writer, advocates for better working conditions for doctors and nurses in the National Health Service – known as the NHS – in the UK.

Kay worked as a doctor from 2004 to 2010 before leaving the medical field for good. During that time, he regularly journaled about impactful cases and situations he encountered at work.

Kay's journal entries reflect the pressure exerted on NHS doctors and nurses, the limited resources they are offered, and the impact working in medicine can have on one's personal life.

Kay published This Is Going to Hurt in 2017, a collection of his journals, at a time when NHS workers were facing harsh criticism from local government leaders. His goal was to depict the harsh conditions in which UK medical practitioners must work.

The book became the second best-selling book in the UK in 2018 and won multiple literary prizes.
