The Reckoning

by Mary L. Trump

Overview

U.S. history is riddled with instances of white supremacy, racism, and brutality. How can our nation heal from the trauma caused by racist ideology? Facing it with honesty is the best place to start. From slavery to the civil rights movement to today, our government and society are impacted by racism. People of color are still affected by racist policies and white supremacy.

The trauma of our past was exacerbated by the Trump administration's blatantly racist rhetoric and policy. The fear, isolation, and division from the Trump years were carried into the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving its citizens divided.

Mary Trump is the niece of former President Donald Trump, who she has strongly rebuked in public and in her writing. Mary Trump holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and uses her expertise to evaluate the effects of racism from a psychological standpoint in The Reckoning: America's trauma and finding a way to heal, published in 2021.
