Introduction

Throughout the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, thousands of soldiers and civilians were exposed to highly toxic chemicals from burn pits.

The practice of burning hazardous materials containing cancer-causing toxins was commonplace on military bases. The materials ranged from old uniforms and plastic packaging to electronics and shipping materials.

Rates of lung disease and rare, aggressive cancers increased in U.S. veterans after they returned home, but the Veterans Affairs health care system has failed to help.

In The Problem with War: Veterans Day Episode, podcast host Jon Stewart talks with three former soldiers about their struggles with injury, illness, and getting proper medical treatment from the U.S. government.

Veteran soldiers Wesley Black, Isiah James, and Israel Del Toro discuss what needs to change, politically and culturally, so vets get the help they need.
