Favorite Quote
Women did awful things out of fear and desperation. We knew that some would be injured, some would die, people around them, including children, would suffer, so we thought, 'we can be of use. You need an abortion, we'll help you.'
Judith Arcana, member of the Jane Collective
Introduction
From 1968 to 1973, an underground group known as the Jane Collective provided an estimated 11,000 safe, affordable, and illegal abortions to women in the Chicago area.
These brave activists did so out of a desire to help women avoid dangerous situations and take control over their bodies and lives.
Tia Lessin is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker whose credits include Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 11/9, Citizen Koch, and Trouble the Water.
In their 2022 film The Janes, Lessin and co-director Emma Pildes talk directly to the group's former members, uncovering a story that is as relevant now as it was in the late 1960s.
