Whether our future culture is dominated by the specter of ghosts, aliens, or both, it seems like the landscape will be hostile to our current understanding of science, and of faith. If, that is, any of those institutions remain.

Matt Hongoltz-Hetling

Introduction

From ghosts and aliens to Bigfoot and witchcraft, people who believe in paranormal phenomena have existed on the margins of society for centuries.

Since the early 2000s, however, the beliefs of previously fringe communities have taken over much greater percentages of the American population.

Matt Hongoltz-Hetling is a New Hampshire-based investigative journalist, author, and Pulitzer Prize finalist.

As part of an exploration into how waning trust in U.S. public institutions has affected society's beliefs in the paranormal, Hongoltz-Hetling spent over two years getting to know members of the Kitt Research Initiative.

In The Ghost Lab, Hongol describes what he learnt from his time with self-identified mediums, ghost hunters, and 'experiencers.'
