Introduction
Humans have known about the Arctic and Antarctica for thousands of years. There are even suggestions that the Ancient Greeks visited the Arctic in around 325 B.C.
Over the centuries, scientific exploration has found that the Arctic and Antarctica are governed by different rules from the rest of the planet.
The Frozen Planet course from The Open University demonstrates the basic science behind the polar regions, giving simple answers to the big questions.
Why are these regions so cold? Why are their seasons so markedly different from the rest of the world? And where are we referring to when we talk about 'the Arctic' and 'Antarctica'?
