The Art of Sanctions
by Richard Nephew
Overview
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal – proved to be a breakthrough in Iran-West relations. However, according to sanctions expert Richard Nephew, the United States could use an update in its sanction policy towards Iran and Russia.
An expert in nuclear policy and sanction strategies, Nephew teaches at the School of International and Public Affairs and directs the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University.
In his 2018 book, The Art of Sanctions, Nephew explains why the United States needs to update its sanction strategy with Iran, reevaluating the pain it caused and the effects it had on international relations.

Just because the damage wrought by sanctions may be less visible, it need not be less destructive, particularly for economically vulnerable populations that may be affected.
