Growing up in Albany in the 1940s, Stephanie Johnson had style, talent, and a desperate need to find a new life in the big city.

Johnson soon became 'Tanqueray,' one of the biggest burlesque stars in New York.

Decades later, author Brandon Stanton met Johnson by chance and decided to include her in his photoblog project Humans of New York, in which he compiled photographs and stories from people he met walking around the city.

Stanton's post about Johnson captured the world's attention, and the two decided to come together and record Johnson's story properly.
