Johnson soon became 'Tanqueray,' one of the biggest burlesque stars in New York.
Decades later, author Brandon Stanton met Johnson by chance and decided to include her in his photoblog project Humans of New York, in which he compiled photographs and stories from people he met walking around the city.
Stanton's post about Johnson captured the world's attention, and the two decided to come together and record Johnson's story properly.
