Introduction
On Easter Sunday in April 2019, seven near-simultaneous explosions devastated the country of Sri Lanka.
Suicide bombers allied with Islamic State coordinated the Easter attacks, which were centered in the capital of Colombo. They killed at least 253 people.
Three of the targets in the bombings in Colombo were churches: two Catholic and one evangelical.
The attacks were especially baffling considering that the Christian minority in Sri Lanka is extremely small — about 8% of Sri Lanka's population.
In this May 2019 episode of BBC's Beyond Belief podcast, host Ernie Rea speaks with Sri Lankans, cultural experts, and Colombo's Catholic archbishop to try to understand the motivation behind this inexplicable, deadly attack.
