Introduction

Consumerism and overconsumption are not only destroying the planet, they are making us more miserable in the process.

Jen Hatmaker is an author, podcaster, and speaker who took on the challenge of combating overconsumption.

Hatmaker realized she was being wasteful and made some changes to her and her family's life, but she didn't feel that the changes were enough.

Inspired by a friend who chose to eat just five types of food for 40 days, Hatmaker decided to simplify her life.

Hatmaker set herself seven tasks, each of which lasted four weeks.

The tasks included cutting back on types of foods, clothes, media, and shopping.

Hatmaker donated possessions and took up green habits such as gardening, shopping locally, and only using one car.

In Simple & Free: 7 Experiments Against Excess, we follow Hatmaker's journey, learning how we can live with less to save our environment and work out what really matters.
