Self-Compassion Will Change Your LifeBy Kristin Neff

In a Nutshell

Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness and support when you're struggling that you'd naturally show to a good friend. It radically increases your ability to cope with feelings of inadequacy and difficult life challenges while increasing motivation and performance.

Unlike self-criticism, which asks if you're good enough, self-compassion asks what's good for you.

Introduction

Self-compassion refers to how we relate to ourselves when we've made a mistake, feel inadequate, or are struggling in some way. It entails three main components: mindfulness, kindness, and common humanity.

Mindfulness allows us to be aware of our distress in a balanced way, without ignoring or getting carried away by it.

Kindness provides warmth, caring, and support as opposed to harsh self-judgment when we're suffering, and generates the desire to help ourselves be well.

Common humanity reminds us that everyone is imperfect and leads an imperfect life, so we don't feel so isolated and alone. This is what differentiates self-compassion from self-pity.

Thousands of research studies have demonstrated that people who are more self-compassionate are happier, healthier, and more resilient. They have better relationships and are more responsible.

Contrary to common fears, self-compassion increases motivation and performance by allowing us to learn and grow from our mistakes.
