Overview

How do we decide which school to send our children to? It's a loaded question that causes sleepless nights for many parents. This is perhaps especially true nowadays, with countless accusations that mainstream school systems have negative implications for many children's development and creativity. So what exactly is creativity, and what education system is best suited to nurturing it?

Raising Creativity aims to answer these questions by considering various education systems, the necessity for creativity and how it is best nurtured. In doing this, she evaluates seven systems; unschooling, homeschooling, Sudbury Valley Free Schools, Montessori, Waldorf, all alternatives within mainstream schools. Within each system, she analyses how best they allow for the conditions in which creativity can thrive; these are autonomy, support and no evaluation.

Raising Creativity is a five-part documentary video on YouTube. Rebecca Zak is an artist, researcher, and teacher who produced this documentary to fulfil the requirements for her PhD in Educational Studies. Since creativity results in art that is unique and novel, Zak believes that it is pivotal in solving the myriad of problems society faces today, and should be the primary focus of schools worldwide.
