The Island is 99% Muslim and the only thing as popular as Islam is soccer. Yet half the population is excluded from playing the game.

Introduction

On the small island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania, only men are allowed to play soccer. But the New Generation Queens, a Zanzibari all-women's soccer team, is looking to change that.

In Zanzibar's conservative Muslim society, it isn't easy to be a female athlete. Members of the New Generation Queens – or NGQ – have to overcome sexism, discrimination, and poverty just to play the game.

In this documentary, Megan Shutzer, a documentarian and journalism professor at the University of California, Berkeley, follows the NGQ on their quest to participate in a women's soccer tournament on the Tanzanian mainland.
