The signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949, continues to be one of the defining moments in the history of modern Europe.
Set up in the aftermath of World War II, NATO's stated aim is to keep the peace in Europe and stop another large-scale war from ever happening again. Today, it comprises 30 members, including Canada, the United States, Turkey, and 27 European nations.
