Introduction

Attending a predominantly white elementary school, four-year-old Khloe encountered bullying from her classmates about her natural Black hair.

When her older sister, St. Clair Detrick-Jules, found out about Khloe's experiences, she decided to create a book of positive messages about Black hair.

St. Clair Detrick-Jules is a filmmaker, photographer, and activist whose work includes the 2018 documentary DACAmented.

For My Beautiful Black Hair, Detrick-Jules photographed and interviewed 101 women, offering them a platform to discuss their journeys to embracing their natural hair and providing encouragement for Khloe.

The book also explores the cultural history of Black women's hair, including how it's been restricted in white spaces.
