Being British and a famous non-rat, I could avoid most conflict by being nice, charming, and eccentric; but I never felt safe. I had to choose my friends carefully.

Introduction
Howard Marks was a working-class boy from a Welsh village who studied physics at Oxford before becoming Britain's most wanted man.
Marks was eventually sentenced to 12 years in America's toughest jail for smuggling vast quantities of cannabis into the U.S.
Marks served seven years, left a lasting impression, and emerged as a celebrity.
In the 1980s, Marks used at least 43 aliases, one favorite of which was 'Mr Nice'.
After being acquitted at London's Old Bailey on well-founded drugs charges, Marks lived the high life until his eventual capture following a dogged DEA campaign.
In his autobiography Mr Nice, Marks recounts stories involving John Lennon, Bill Clinton, and a rich cast of underground characters, most of whom responded to his legendary charisma.
