Overview

The fight against HIV and AIDS began during the 1980s, but people around the world are still getting infected and dying to this day. Why hasn't modern medicine been able to tackle the epidemic despite the discovery of therapies and medications that allow many patients to live a long, healthy life?

Elton John - iconic singer, songwriter, and AIDS awareness activist - blames stigma, ignorance, and inaction for the continuing crisis. Through his Elton John AIDS Foundation, he has helped end the suffering of millions throughout the world by addressing the stigma many HIV and AIDS sufferers face.

What began as volunteering and performing at benefit concerts quickly transformed into starting a foundation to connect nonprofits with the crucial funding they needed. The nonprofit work of Elton John and those of others like him changed the course of the epidemic by raising awareness and saving lives.

"Indeed, what is truly killing tens of thousands of people in America and millions of people around the world is not just a virulent contagion but a lack of human compassion - a lack of love - for those who are living with HIV/AIDS."
