Loha Singh, Kanpur electrician

Introduction

For decades, the North Indian industrial city of Kanpur has faced extreme electricity shortages, which have wrecked its industry as well as its citizens' quality of life.

Faced with rolling blackouts imposed by the local electricity company, residents took matters into their own hands.

Two opposing interests are brought to the fore in this 2013 documentary by Bollywood director Deepti Kakkar and Kanpur local Fahad Mustafa.

New managing director Ritu Maheshwari tries to turn around an inefficient and corrupt power company. Meanwhile, local electrician Loha Singh helps poor residents to illegally connect their homes to the main supply.

Released to English-speaking audiences under the title Powerless, Katiyabaaz shows what happens when mismanagement and abject poverty collide.
