If there is skill involved, I think it's how we roll with the bad things that happen … do we resist it and fight it and judge it and get resentful about it? Or do we lean into it, learn from it and keep showing up the next day?

Justin McLeod

Introduction

With 1.2 million subscribers, Hinge is one of the most successful dating apps in the world. But in 2010, it was merely the passion project of an entrepreneur with romantic problems of his own.

After a bad breakup, Harvard Business School student Justin McLeod was desperately looking for a girlfriend.

Deciding to build an app that would allow him and his classmates to 'like' their crushes and get matched with mutual 'likes' sent McLeod down the path to forming Hinge.

Today, Hinge is known as the dating app for those interested in serious relationships, with the tagline 'designed to be deleted.'

In his podcast How I Built This, Guy Raz investigates the stories behind the world's most successful companies and the entrepreneurs who built them.

In this March 2021 episode, Raz talks to McLeod about his journey building Hinge and what he learned from it.
