Overview

In the Same Breath explores the early confusion and misinformation surrounding the 2020 coronavirus outbreak, following the example of both China and the United States.

The film delves into the mistakes both governments committed when attempting to control and confine the virus. It also explores the trauma that the pandemic caused for healthcare workers who were exposed to death on a daily basis: like soldiers on the frontlines.

Chinese-born American director Nanfu Wang takes a very personal approach to the documentary. The film explores her own feelings about the virus, the effect it had on her family, and her perspective on the history of the Chinese government in dealing with times of crisis.

"I have lived under authoritarianism and I have lived in a society that calls itself free. In both systems, ordinary people become casualties of their leaders' pursuit of power."
