If you are the kind of person who sees death as the enemy and continued life itself as a victory, no matter how lonely, painful, or disabled that life may be … your view is different than mine, and different than Brian's.

Introduction
Amy Bloom's husband wanted to die, not because he was unhappy, but because his memory and mind were fading.
When Brian Ameche was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease at the age of 66, he decided that he did not want to experience the confusion and helplessness that comes as the disease progresses.
His wife, heartbroken and grieving, helped him find a way to die legally, painlessly, and in his own time.
Assisted suicide is a contentious issue. Bloom and Ameche discovered that Zurich, Switzerland, is the only place to legally die by assisted suicide if you don't have a diagnosis of six months to live.
Before Ameche died, he encouraged Bloom, a well-known fiction author, to write about him and their difficult experience with his diagnosis and death.
In her memoir In Love, Bloom captures her and Ameche's journey as truthfully as possible as she works through the grieving process.
