If you think the cold of Antarctica is out of your comfort zone, think again - Antarctica Marathon is in summer. More than the cold, it's the marathon's high price and difficult logistics that make it challenging.
You can't fly to Antarctica. While it is technically possible, there are very few flights that risk going there. You have to travel via cruise ship.
The Drake Passage is one of the most treacherous voyages for ships. Currents at its latitude meet no resistance from any landmass, and waves top 12m (40 feet), hence its reputation as 'the most powerful convergence of seas.'
Antarctica Marathon takes place once a year in summer when there is light all day. The run is on King George Island, the safest place possible — it's the only place that has a kind of road.
King George Island is the unofficial 'capital of Antarctica' with research stations from 12 nations. Its population reaches about 600 people (mostly scientists) in summer.
