Overview

Since we first tapped into the world of genetics - a branch of biology to do with our genes and how we're made - this field has been used to solve crimes, identify lost relatives, and cure diseases. But do we know enough about our genes to start confidently meddling with them? And how does the boom of biotech companies like 23 and Me impact our long-term privacy? Simply put, genetics is a complicated topic; it's solved as many problems for us as it has created. Today, this field presents some messy questions about our modern day morals and ethics.

For those of us out of the loop, nonfiction storyteller Bruce Kennedy has summed it all up in an uncomplicated manner for this History 101 episode. Kennedy won an Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft Emmy award for his documentary Research Decisions That Shook the World in 2005. He was also nominated for the Emmy in Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program for his contribution to Hostile Planet in 2019.

History 101 is a Netflix docuseries that concisely covers numerous topics. This episode covers everything to do with Genetics – the structure of DNA, the historical development of Genetics, and the consequences of the potential misuse of the field.
