Even the word 'heliophysics' is not very well known in scientific communities, let alone the general public, but five-year-olds know 'tyrannosaurus rex,' and that's a hard word, so we should know heliophysics as well.

Michael Kirk, heliophysicist

Introduction

What is the Sun made of, how does it create its own 'weather,' and how does it affect us here on Earth?

We live in the 'heliosphere' — the radius touched by the Sun's influence in our planetary system, yet many of us still know surprisingly little about our central star and the phenomena attached to it.

In this April 2024 episode of the science podcast Ologies, host Alie Ward asks two NASA solar scientists – known as 'heliophysicists' – all about how the Sun works.

Michael Kirk is a research scientist in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, and India Knight is completing a Ph.D. in Astrophysics at Georgia State University.
