She becomes almost like a living thing … A real living robot that you can imagine going to Mars and doing the things that you've dreamed of doing there. To say it was like a child being born would be to trivialize parenthood, but it feels sort of like that.

Introduction

Has there ever been life on Mars? In 2003, twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity were sent to Mars to discover if it was once habitable.

In Good Night Oppy, a documentary film from director Ryan White, this groundbreaking Mars mission is portrayed from start to finish through footage captured inside NASA and a CGI imagining of the rovers' experiences.

Both rovers outstripped scientists' predictions of how long they would be able to function on Mars. Opportunity, in particular, surpassed all expectations throughout the mission.

In the end, Spirit and Opportunity took on lives and characters of their own.
