Introduction
The ocean can seem a grey, uniform mass in contrast to the astounding variety of habitats, landscapes, and ecosystems found on land. But nothing could be further from the truth.
This course offered by the University of Southampton takes us on a journey into some of the most fascinating and mysterious places on our planet, guided by oceanographic experts.
Rachel Mills serves as the university's Dean of Faculty for Environmental and Life Sciences, while Jon Copley is a marine ecologist and science advisor for the BBC's Blue Planet.
Through engaging videos and articles, this course covers the history of ocean exploration, the science behind ocean currents, and the incredible array of wildlife they contain.
We will also explore the ocean's relationship with humanity, including the impact of the waste we dump there, the potential and pitfalls of deep-sea mining, and the question of who owns the waters.
