The investment a shamefaced outside world poured into Rwanda after the genocide — financial, emotional, intellectual — was enormous, given the country's tiny size and population. No wonder so many are reluctant to reassess.

Introduction

After the 1994 genocide that left between 800,000 and 1,000,000 dead, the Rwandan people were desperate for peace and healing and were promised it by President Paul Kagame's new government.

Named for the hotel room sign which hid the strangled body of one of Kagame's opponents, Do Not Disturb tells the story of the exiled aides and confidants of Kagame who lost faith in his regime.

Award-winning journalist and former BBC foreign correspondent Michela Wrong uses her comprehensive array of interviews to piece together a narrative that contradicts many of the Rwandan government's claims.

Through years-long correspondence with ex-high-ranking officials, Wrong paints a vivid picture of Rwandan culture and politics.

With a particular focus on comrades-in-arms turned political adversaries Patrick Karegeya and Paul Kagame, Wrong explores the build-up and fallout to the one's assassination and the other's autocracy.
