Favorite Quote

We searched for truth and campaigned for justice. We learned that it all starts in our own hearts, in how we live our lives and treat others. No amount of activism will change the world until enough of us change ourselves.

Sean Strub

Introduction

When Sean Strub followed the sound of gunshots to Manhattan's Dakota building in 1980, he was confronted with John Lennon's body.

Invited to a house party in 1970s Washington, the author found himself drinking with Tennessee Williams.

Born in Iowa, Strub's life story takes him from operating elevators in the U.S. Capitol to launching the HIV advocacy group Sero Project.

Along the way, the writer and activist runs for Congress, produces one of history's longest-running Off-Broadway one-person shows, and launches the world's first glossy magazine for people with AIDS.

Whether having his magazine column spontaneously edited by Gore Vidal at dinner, or smothering a senator's house with a giant condom, Body Counts is a humane and compelling account of Strub's remarkable life.
