I think the biggest barrier to reunion is fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of rejection, fear of what might happen if we open up old wounds.

Introduction
There are several reasons why an adopted person may be blocked from finding their biological family.
Frequently the emotions of the adoptee, their adoptive family, or their biological family can be barriers to adoption reunion.
Legal hurdles also present challenges to adoption reunion. Closed adoptions block access to information. Additionally the laws of the region where the adopted person was born have varying levels of access or restriction to important information.
Adoption reunion may be stifled when the adoptee encounters adoption reunion rejection. Difficulties arise when the adoptee's natural family does not wish to reunite. Alternatively, the adoptee and their birth family may attempt a reunion that fails.
These are a few insights I have picked up after speaking with adoptees in interviews on the "Who Am I Really?" podcast.
