Adoption reunion can be smooth and nearly effortless or incredibly challenging with many obstacles. The barriers to reunion can be emotional, legal, explicitly stated, or implied by others trying to influence the adopted person. Here are some blockers preventing adoption reunion.

There are several reasons why an adopted person may be blocked from finding their biological family.

Frequently the emotions of the adoptee, their adoptive family, or their biological family can be barriers to adoption reunion.

Legal hurdles also present challenges to adoption reunion. Closed adoptions block access to information. Additionally the laws of the region where the adopted person was born have varying levels of access or restriction to important information.

Adoption reunion may be stifled when the adoptee encounters adoption reunion rejection. Difficulties arise when the adoptee's natural family does not wish to reunite. Alternatively, the adoptee and their birth family may attempt a reunion that fails.
